Mleiha National Park Showcases Sharjah's Rich Desert Biodiversity And Conservation Efforts

Mleiha National Park (MNP) in Sharjah is a leading eco-tourism site, offering visitors a chance to explore the desert's beauty and connect with nature. Established by Emiri Decree under His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the park is managed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). Covering 34.2 square kilometres, it showcases one of the Arabian Peninsula's most ecologically diverse areas.

The park's varied landscapes include Barchan sand dunes, gravel plains, and limestone outcrops. These terrains create unique micro-habitats that support diverse flora and fauna. This ecological richness enhances Mleiha's global appeal, especially as part of the Faya Palaeolandscape, recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Discover Biodiversity at Mleiha National Park

MNP is home to over 100 species, including more than 20 native plants like the Ghaf tree and Umbrella Thorn Acacia. These plants stabilise sands, retain moisture, and provide shelter for other life forms. The park also supports over 11 mammal species such as the Arabian Red Fox and Sand Gazelle.

Reptiles thrive here too, with species like the Sandfish Skink and Arabian Horned Viper adapting to desert life. Birdwatchers can spot over 20 bird species, including Bonelli’s Eagle and Purple Sunbird. Insects and arachnids also play vital roles in this ecosystem.

Mleiha offers guided nature trails, flora identification walks, and biome explorations to connect visitors with its ecosystem. Wildlife observation points provide opportunities for quiet encounters and photography. Horse riding across dunes allows visitors to experience these animals' historical significance.

The park's activities aim to raise environmental awareness while supporting UAE sustainability goals. Shurooq considers Mleiha's biodiversity as "natural capital," essential for both environmental health and sustainable economic growth through ecotourism.

Conservation is crucial at MNP, with a Core Conservation Zone managed alongside the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA). This zone protects sensitive habitats while allowing visitor exploration. The park demonstrates that the Arabian desert is a thriving ecosystem where specialised life flourishes.

Mleiha National Park exemplifies how deserts are not barren but vibrant ecosystems inviting exploration beyond dunes. It stands as a testament to conservation success in Sharjah, encouraging all who visit to appreciate nature closely.
