Mizab And Mishrab: Celebrating Traditional Leather Craftsmanship In Najran Region

In Najran, the "Mizab" and "Mishrab" are celebrated for their traditional leather craftsmanship. Despite modern advancements, these items retain cultural significance and are still cherished in homes. The Mizab, a cradle crafted from goatskin and palm fronds, is a family heirloom passed down through generations. Grandmothers often gift them to grandchildren, providing a comfortable and culturally meaningful resting place.

The Mizab measures about 85 cm long and 45 cm wide. It features a wooden piece called "nasiyya," supported by palm fronds and covered in leather. This design resembles a headboard, offering security and comfort for infants. Leather strips known as "al-hadab" adorn the Mizab, creating a soothing sound when rocked.

The Mizab also includes a cylindrical space for the infant to sleep on, supported by sticks made from palm frond skin. A durable leather loop allows easy carrying or hanging. Its design narrows the opening to protect infants from falling objects and encourages side-sleeping to reduce suffocation risks.

The "Mishrab," another traditional item, is a leather water container preferred by older individuals. Crafted from sheep skin, it keeps water cool for long periods. Its portability and ability to be hung anywhere add to its appeal. The Mishrab's unique taste and refreshing coolness make it particularly attractive.

During a visit by a Saudi Press Agency reporter to leather shops in Aba Al-Saud neighborhood, shop owners showcased various leather products. These items are crafted through processes like cleaning, hair removal, pickling, tanning, drying, stretching, and precise cutting.

While many leather items are popular, the Mishrab (locally known as "Gharb") for water storage and the Mizab remain highly valued. They attract significant consumer interest both locally and beyond due to their cultural importance and practicality.

These handcrafted items not only serve practical purposes but also preserve cultural heritage. Their enduring appeal highlights the blend of tradition with functionality in everyday life.
