Misk And Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations Introduce Challenge For Change Program To Boost Nonprofit Impact In Saudi Arabia

The Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (Misk) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have introduced the "Challenge for Change" Program. Announced at the Misk Global Forum in Riyadh, this initiative aims to boost nonprofit organizations and social enterprises in Saudi Arabia. It builds on Misk's 2021 Nonprofit Youth Development Organization Program, which led to the creation of 41 new nonprofits and supported 14 existing ones.

The Challenge for Change Program offers financial grants up to $2.5 million. These funds will support impactful solutions in technology, environment, and health and wellbeing. The program is a collaboration between Misk and the Gates Foundation, focusing on accelerating nonprofit initiatives and social impact projects within the Kingdom.

Misk and Gates Foundations Launch New Initiative

Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Gates Foundation, highlighted the role of young Saudi entrepreneurs. He stated, "Today, young Saudi entrepreneurs are harnessing cutting-edge technologies in fields such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and climate tech." This generation is achieving significant success through digital startups and social entrepreneurship.

The program encourages researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit leaders to propose solutions that foster tangible development within their communities. These solutions could potentially be applied across the Middle East and in low- and middle-income countries. The initiative seeks to drive progress by leveraging local talent for broader regional benefits.

Dr. Badr Al-Badr, CEO of Misk Foundation, emphasized the program's alignment with Misk's mission to support nonprofits focused on social impact. He noted that partnering with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation promotes innovation in Saudi Arabia while addressing both local and global challenges.

The announcement was made during the eighth edition of the Misk Global Forum. This event serves as a platform for fostering local and global partnerships that empower youth and prepare them for future challenges. The forum connects young people with leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs worldwide.

A Global Platform for Dialogue

The Misk Global Forum 2024 is one of the largest youth-focused forums globally. Held under the theme "By Youth, For Youth," it facilitates dialogue and idea exchange among young people worldwide. The forum aims to unleash potential and encourage collaboration for positive global change.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's involvement at MGF 2024 follows a landmark partnership announced in April 2024 with Saudi Arabia. This includes a $600 million pledge by Saudi Arabia to protect 370 million children annually from polio and lift millions out of poverty across 33 Islamic Development Bank member countries.

As part of this new partnership's implementation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced plans to establish a regional office in Mohammed Bin Salman Nonprofit City. This move signifies a commitment to strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia while expanding efforts across the region.
