Ministry Of Education Announces Updated Educational Streams For Cycle 3 Students Starting Academic Year 2025–2026

The Ministry of Education (MoE) in the UAE has announced changes to the educational streams for Cycle 3 students in public and private schools following its curriculum. These changes will take effect from the academic year 2025–2026. The decision follows comprehensive surveys involving subject specialists and parents, which highlighted recent student trends.

During a media briefing at the MoE headquarters in Abu Dhabi, attended by Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education, Mohammed Al-Qasim, Undersecretary of MoE, and other officials, the updates were revealed. The redesigned streams aim to align with students' future goals and support their higher education paths while adapting to the evolving job market.

Updated Educational Streams for Cycle 3 Students

The updated educational streams are structured to meet students' aspirations and prepare them for future careers. The general stream will include foundational scientific subjects to enhance skills and talents. Meanwhile, the advanced stream will delve deeper into scientific topics to ready students for science-related university majors.

These updates will not impact current Grade 11 and Grade 12 students' academic plans. However, Grade 12 students in the general stream can opt to replace physics with alternative subjects as per the Ministry's guidance manual. Additionally, Grade 8 students must choose their stream based on their university goals.

The advanced stream is designed for students aiming for university studies in sciences, engineering, medicine, and pharmacy. Conversely, the general stream will guide students towards fields like humanities, literature, business administration, law, arts, social sciences, and police sciences.

These updates were developed in consultation with several higher education institutions across the UAE. This collaboration ensures a smooth transition from school to university and eventually into the workforce.

Guidance for Students and Educators

The MoE has issued guidelines within an academic framework to assist educators in helping students build their academic plans aligned with career ambitions. These guidelines ensure that educational streams meet higher education institutions' admission criteria.

A detailed guide has been published for students and parents explaining these updates. It highlights the crucial role of school counsellors in providing guidance throughout students' academic journeys.

This initiative aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of how to plan their education paths effectively. By aligning educational streams with future aspirations and labour market needs, the Ministry seeks to enhance student readiness for higher education and career success.
