UAE Ministry Of Culture Collaborates With Marine Sports Federation To Safeguard Maritime Heritage

The Ministry of Culture and the UAE Marine Sports Federation have formalised a partnership to preserve and promote the UAE's maritime heritage globally. This collaboration aims to enhance cultural projects, research, and training programs, aligning with the UAE's vision to protect its intangible cultural heritage and establish itself as a global cultural hub.

The agreement was signed during the Sir Bu Nair Festival, coinciding with the third round of the Traditional Wooden Powerboat Racing Championship. This event is a significant celebration of Emirati maritime heritage, attracting enthusiasts from across the nation. Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairman of the UAE Marine Sports Federation, were present alongside other officials.

UAE Partners to Preserve Maritime Heritage

This agreement supports efforts to safeguard traditional sports by documenting authentic practices and developing mechanisms for their protection. It empowers communities to engage actively in preserving these traditions. Strategic programs include digital documentation of marine sports and educational initiatives for youth. An international festival for traditional marine sports is also planned to highlight the sea's historical role in shaping Emirati identity.

Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi emphasised the importance of maritime heritage in national identity. He stated, "Maritime heritage is a cornerstone of the UAE’s national identity and an integral part of our collective memory." The agreement aims to use this heritage as a bridge for global cultural dialogue, connecting people through shared values.

The partnership promotes international collaboration with organisations like UNESCO and leading maritime heritage centres in Asia and Europe. This cooperation aims to position traditional marine sports as ambassadors of Emirati values on a global stage. Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan highlighted this by saying, "This agreement represents a pioneering model of cooperation between the cultural and sports sectors."

He further noted that signing this agreement during such a significant festival reflects the seamless connection between past and present. It showcases the Emirati spirit of authenticity shared worldwide under wise leadership guidance to preserve heritage for future generations.

This initiative reaffirms the UAE’s leadership in safeguarding shared human heritage while nurturing cultural identity as a foundation for sustainable national development. It underscores the nation's enduring legacy and forward-looking cultural vision.
