Ministries Of Energy And Economy Reveal Winners Of Carbon Capture And Utilization Challenge At Forum
The Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Economy and Planning have revealed the winners of the Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) Challenge. This announcement took place at the Saudi Green Initiative Forum in Riyadh on December 3-4. The event was attended by Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal F. Alibrahim.
The CCU Challenge, initiated in collaboration with UpLink, aims to find innovative solutions for carbon capture and utilization within Saudi Arabia's circular carbon economy framework. This initiative seeks to accelerate decarbonization efforts and boost climate action by leveraging innovation and technology to combat climate change.

The challenge encourages startups to develop pioneering solutions for capturing and repurposing carbon dioxide (CO2). These solutions can involve direct capture without modification or through chemical transformation processes. The goal is to enhance industrial sustainability while addressing climate change.
From a pool of 315 global entries, 11 startups were chosen based on criteria such as scalability, commercial viability, technological readiness, and sustainability. These selected innovations highlight the significant role that carbon capture technologies play in mitigating climate change impacts.
The top five winners will receive cash prizes along with business support and increased global exposure. They will also have the chance to join a program organized by various initiative partners. This program offers market access, business advisory services, investment opportunities, and participation in international events.
The CCU Challenge was initially announced during a special meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Riyadh in April 2024. It officially launched in July 2024 through a partnership with the UpLink platform.
This initiative underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to fostering innovative approaches to environmental challenges. By supporting startups focused on carbon capture, the country aims to advance its circular carbon economy goals while contributing to global climate action efforts.
