Mina: A Sacred Site Reflecting Prophetic Traditions And Modern Hajj Practices

Mina is a sacred site central to the Hajj pilgrimage, deeply embedded in Islamic history and spirituality. Situated between Makkah and Muzdalifah, about seven kilometers from the Grand Mosque, it becomes a hub of faith during Hajj. Pilgrims engage in rituals like stoning the Jamarat, animal sacrifice, and hair trimming here. Mina's spiritual significance is enhanced by its unique geography.

Today, Mina features over 100,000 permanent tents made from fire- and heat-resistant fiberglass. These air-conditioned units cover nearly 2.5 million square meters and are systematically numbered for easy access. This transformation has turned Mina into a temporary city with integrated accommodation, healthcare, security, and logistical services.

The Jamarat Bridge is a key part of this system. It is a 950-meter-long, 80-meter-wide structure that can handle over 300,000 pilgrims per hour. Designed to streamline crowd movement, it includes multiple entry and exit points, escalators, emergency corridors, and advanced surveillance systems using artificial intelligence to monitor crowd density.

Mina's historical tents were once temporary structures made from cloth or wood. These lacked basic safety features and were dismantled after each Hajj season. The modern tents now provide safety and comfort for millions of pilgrims in an organized environment.

Al-Khayf Mosque near Mina has also received special attention from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs as part of efforts to enhance services at holy sites. Improvements include expanding services and deploying smart technologies to manage the increasing number of pilgrims efficiently.

Vision 2030 Initiatives

The Saudi government continues to invest in developing Hajj infrastructure under King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz. These initiatives aim to improve transportation and accommodation systems as part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals.

Mina remains a place where sacrifice, devotion, and obedience come alive during Hajj. It holds a special place in the collective memory of Muslims worldwide as a site where earthly actions meet divine intentions during these sacred days.
