MEWA Highlights Importance Of Soilless Organic Agriculture For Environmental Sustainability And Agricultural Efficiency
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA) is emphasising the role of soilless agriculture in addressing environmental issues and improving farming efficiency. Currently, about 57 hectares in Saudi Arabia are dedicated to this method, producing various fruits and vegetables. This was discussed during a workshop at the ministry's headquarters in Riyadh, focusing on achievements and challenges in organic agriculture research and development.
Assistant Deputy Minister for Agriculture Affairs Dr. Sulaiman AlKhateeb, along with experts and investors, participated in the event. The ministry aims to achieve several objectives through organic agriculture. These include producing safe food, conserving water by using soilless methods that require less water than traditional farming, preserving the environment, optimising natural resources, and preventing soil degradation from chemical use.

The ministry has observed significant growth in the organic agriculture sector over the past five years. There have been notable increases in organic holdings, farming areas, and production. Soilless farming has expanded in regions such as Riyadh, Qassim, Makkah, Ha'il, Najran, and the Eastern Province. This growth highlights the potential of organic practices to enhance agricultural productivity.
To support this sector further, MEWA has implemented various measures. These include assisting farmers in transitioning to organic practices, promoting organic products, and raising consumer awareness about the benefits of organic farming. Such initiatives aim to strengthen the foundation of organic agriculture within the Kingdom.
The ministry plans to boost scientific research and establish documentation offices to support organic agriculture. Encouraging investments and providing packaging solutions are also part of their strategy. Collaborating with international organisations is another step towards enhancing organic farming practices across Saudi Arabia.
Soilless cultivation is noted for its high productivity compared to traditional open-field methods. The ministry is adopting advanced agricultural techniques within the organic sector to pursue these goals effectively. By doing so, they aim to enhance economic value and diversify the production base within Saudi Arabia's agricultural landscape.
Overall, MEWA's efforts are directed towards achieving critical objectives through organic agriculture. These include producing nutritious food safely while conserving resources like water and preserving natural ecosystems. The focus remains on sustainable practices that optimise resource utilisation without compromising environmental health.
