MEWA Highlights Importance Of Arab Integration In Seed Production And Conservation For Food Security

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) has stressed the need for Arab collaboration in developing systems for producing, evaluating, and conserving economic seeds. This is crucial for maintaining agricultural resources and ensuring food security, especially in arid regions that demand innovative solutions. This focus was underscored during a meeting with the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD).

During the meeting, discussions centred on enhancing cooperation in conserving plant genetic resources, potato cultivation, and fruit tree production techniques. Initiatives to strengthen Arab food security were also explored. The MEWA Seed Center's achievements in conserving plant genetic resources and advancing seed production technologies were reviewed to improve quality and productivity.

MEWA Promotes Arab Cooperation in Seed Production

Both parties considered opportunities for joint training and research programs with ACSAD to support sustainable agricultural development. Potential joint projects in high-quality seed production and modern agricultural technologies were discussed. These efforts aim to strengthen cooperation in plant genetic evaluation and expertise exchange.

This collaboration seeks to enhance the capabilities of Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations in addressing food security challenges. It also aims to improve agricultural productivity amid climate change impacts. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to leading the Arab region by supporting specialized centers like the Seed Center.

The Seed Center plays a crucial role in developing seed production systems, preserving genetic resources, and providing farmers with access to improved seedlings. This contributes to increased agricultural productivity and sustainability, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives.

By focusing on these initiatives, MEWA aims to bolster Arab integration in agriculture. The goal is to ensure that innovative solutions are developed for arid regions while fostering effective partnerships across the region.
