Meta Platforms To Utilise Public EU User Content For AI Model Training
Meta Platforms announced plans to begin training its artificial intelligence (AI) models using public content shared by adults in the European Union. This initiative will utilise posts, comments, and interactions with AI on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. The company aims to enhance its AI models for European users by leveraging this data.
Starting this week, EU users will receive notifications through Meta's apps and email about data collection. They will be provided with an easy opt-out form. Meta assured that all opt-out requests will be honoured, including those previously submitted. The company stressed that private messages and data from users under 18 will not be included.

This development follows the introduction of Meta AI in Europe last month. It marks a resumption of training efforts that were paused last year due to regulatory issues. The European Data Protection Board confirmed Meta's compliance with legal obligations, allowing the company to proceed with its AI projects.
Meta's approach aligns with industry norms, as companies like Google and OpenAI have already employed similar data for AI development. Privacy advocates had expressed concerns earlier, but Meta maintains that its process is transparent and respects user rights.
The initiative aims to improve the AI's comprehension of Europe's diverse languages, cultures, and digital behaviours. This includes understanding regional dialects and unique uses of humour and sarcasm. By doing so, Meta hopes to offer more relevant and localised AI tools while adhering to Europe's stringent data protection standards.
Meta emphasised that this step is designed to deliver enhanced AI experiences tailored to European users' needs. The company believes that respecting user preferences and maintaining transparency are crucial in achieving these goals.
