MCIT Hosts Workshop To Explore Opportunities In Launching Domain Names For Digital Identity
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) recently hosted a workshop on "New Generic Top-Level Domains (New gTLDs)." This event was organised with the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), the Digital Government Authority (DGA), and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). Over 150 experts from government and private sectors attended.
The workshop aimed to enhance understanding of domain names, which are crucial for identifying website addresses like mcit.gov.sa. These domains are vital for establishing digital identities for both organisations and individuals. The event is part of national efforts to boost awareness, build capabilities, and support domain name usage.

Scheduled for April 2026, the New Generic Top-Level Domains Program (New gTLD Program – Next Round) will be overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The program allows countries and organisations to create custom domain names that reflect their digital identity, enhancing their global online presence.
The workshop provided insights into the technical and regulatory aspects of the New gTLD Program. Participants learned about application stages, evaluation processes, verification steps, and transitioning to operation post-approval. This knowledge is essential for national entities preparing for the upcoming program round.
During the workshop, discussions highlighted available support programs for entities facing resource challenges. These programs aim to assist organisations in navigating the complexities of domain name management. By addressing potential obstacles, these initiatives help strengthen Saudi Arabia's digital presence globally.
Raising awareness about opportunities and risks associated with the program was another key focus. Understanding these factors is crucial for building user trust both locally and internationally. The workshop's discussions contribute significantly to reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s sovereign digital presence.
This collaborative effort underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing its digital infrastructure. By equipping national entities with necessary knowledge and resources, the country aims to bolster its position in the global digital landscape.
