MBZUAI Joins Forces with UNDP to Leverage AI in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals
The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has recently entered into a strategic partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to propel the application of artificial intelligence (AI) towards achieving sustainable development goals. This collaboration marks a significant milestone, positioning MBZUAI as the founding knowledge partner for the UNDP’s AI for Sustainable Development Platform (AI4SDP), an initiative that emerged in the wake of COP28's discussions.
The primary aim of this partnership is to leverage AI technology in tackling some of the most pressing global challenges. These include enhancing environmental resilience, improving water resources management, advancing climate adaptation efforts, fostering social cohesion, and striving to reduce inequalities. The agreement was formalized through a signing ceremony attended by Sultan Al Hajji, Vice President of Public Affairs and Alumni Relations at MBZUAI, and Abdallah Al Dardari, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Arab States.

"MBZUAI is at the forefront of this effort, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to driving impactful advancements in achieving climate stability," Sultan Al Hajji remarked during the signing. He highlighted the potential benefits for various UN agencies in the Gulf region once AI4SDP is fully operational. The platform aims to contribute climate research, use cases, and scenarios that can be shared and implemented in real-world settings.
Abdallah Al Dardari expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, acknowledging the dual nature of artificial intelligence as a powerful tool that comes with its set of challenges. "We recognise the transformative power of artificial intelligence and are aware of both its potential and its risks," he stated. "AI is at the forefront of innovation. Together with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, we are committed to harnessing the potential of AI in an ethical and responsible manner." Al Dardari also emphasized the focus on addressing critical issues in the Arab region, such as managing water resources and combating climate change.
This collaboration between MBZUAI and UNDP underlines a shared commitment to utilizing AI for good, particularly in areas that are crucial for sustainable development. By combining expertise and resources, both organizations aim to create impactful solutions that can address environmental challenges and promote a more equitable world.
