MBZUAI Establishes Itself As A Global Leader In AI Knowledge And Innovation

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is central to the UAE's goal of becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence, according to Timothy Baldwin, Provost and Professor of Natural Language Processing at MBZUAI. As the first university worldwide dedicated solely to AI, it was founded to enhance national capabilities in talent, research, and innovation, aligning with the UAE’s National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031.

MBZUAI is ranked among the top 10 AI universities globally. It has over 700 students and a competitive acceptance rate of 5 percent from more than 8,000 applications in 2025. This year marked the introduction of its first undergraduate class with over 110 students, including 25 percent Emiratis.

MBZUAI: Leading AI Education and Research

The university is expanding its academic programmes. Alongside its Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, three new graduate courses will be introduced this year: a Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence, a Master of Science in Statistics and Data Science, and a PhD in Robotics. These will complement existing courses in computer science, computer vision, machine learning, and natural language processing.

Beyond education, MBZUAI plays a significant role in the UAE’s economic diversification through its Incubation and Entrepreneurship Centre (IEC). The centre supports local startups by providing mentorship and access to funding. Additionally, MBZUAI collaborates with global tech leaders and government bodies to ensure its research addresses practical challenges.

The university's research focuses on areas where AI can make a substantial impact: foundation models, healthcare, energy and sustainability, and robotics. A notable project is AIDO (AI-Driven Digital Organism), the world’s first multiscale foundation model for biology. This initiative supports national projects like the Emirati Genome Programme and facilitates advancements in disease prediction, drug discovery, and personalised medicine.

The MBZUAI Academy strengthens this research agenda by promoting AI adoption through customised executive education. Its flagship programme equips UAE leaders with practical tools for integrating AI into their work environments.

Leadership Programmes

In October 2025, the academy will launch the Global AI Leadership Programme. This initiative will bring together international decision-makers to examine the UAE’s innovative approach to AI implementation.

Baldwin highlighted that MBZUAI's vision rests on three pillars: attracting world-class AI talent, advancing research in key sectors, and fostering innovation through partnerships and entrepreneurship. "Our mission is to build national capabilities," he stated.

The university continues to contribute significantly to both educational advancement and economic growth within the UAE by nurturing talent and driving innovation through strategic collaborations.
