UAE's MBZ-SAT Launch Tonight Marks Major Step In Space Technology And Earth Observation
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) is gearing up for the launch of MBZ-SAT, the most technologically advanced satellite in the region. This satellite, named in the honour of Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, is ready for its journey into space aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket.
The launch is slated for later tonight, with a 27-minute window starting at 10:49 PM (UAE time) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA. However, this timing could be adjusted due to weather or other operational factors, with a backup opportunity set for Wednesday, 15 January, if necessary.
The MBZ-SAT signifies a remarkable achievement in the UAE's space exploration efforts. Engineered entirely by Emirati professionals at MBRSC, it marks a significant leap forward in Earth observation technology.
Weighing 750 kg and measuring 3m x 5m, this satellite boasts double the imaging precision of previous models, the ability to capture ten times more imagery, and the capability to deliver data within two hours. It is equipped with state-of-the-art electric propulsion, precision navigation, and a high-resolution camera, enhancing its utility in environmental monitoring, infrastructure management, and disaster response.
The satellite's creation, achieved in partnership with UAE-based firms, has spurred economic development and facilitated the transfer of knowledge, thereby reinforcing the UAE's standing and competitiveness in the realm of space technology.

MBRSC completed the final pre-launch preparations, including the successful integration of MBZ-SAT onto the Falcon 9 rocket at SpaceX's facilities in the USA. This milestone was achieved following the formal announcement of the satellite in 2020 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and its subsequent approval for launch by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and President of MBRSC, in the previous year.
Upon reaching low Earth orbit, the satellite will be closely monitored and managed from the Mission Control Centre at MBRSC. Teams stationed here will oversee its functions and analyze the data it sends back to Earth, ensuring the satellite's contributions to various applications are maximized.
