Mawani Achieves Significant 14.45% Increase In Cargo Throughput For 2024
The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has reported a notable increase in cargo throughput for 2024, reaching 320,784,757 tons. This marks a 14.45% rise from the previous year's 300,542,872 tons. The authority also noted an increase in outbound containers by 8.86%, totalling 2,816,059 TEUs compared to 2,586,746 TEUs in 2023.
General cargo volumes saw a significant surge of 30.39%, amounting to 9,980,465 tons from the prior year's 7,654,081 tons. Solid bulk cargo experienced a modest rise of 6.23%, reaching 52,117,108 tons compared to the previous figure of 49,060,740 tons. Liquid bulk cargo also increased by 16.29%, totalling 177,435,836 tons from last year's 152,577,817 tons.

Inbound containers rose by 13.79%, reaching a total of 2,980,842 TEUs compared to the previous year's count of 2,619,548 TEUs. Livestock imports showed a significant growth of 19.63%, with numbers rising to 9,719,343 head from the earlier total of 8,124,842 in the past year.
Despite these gains in various sectors, overall container throughput experienced a decline of 10.93%. The total was recorded at 7,521,085 TEUs compared to last year's figure of 8,443,784 TEUs. Transshipment containers faced a sharp drop of 46.74%, totalling only 1,724,184 TEUs against the previous count of 3,237,490 TEUs.
The number of vessels handled decreased by 4.56%, with Mawani managing only 11,579 ships compared to last year's total of 12,132 ships. Passenger numbers also fell significantly by 27.02%, with only 736,177 passengers recorded compared to the previous year's count of 1,008,730 passengers.
Vehicle handling saw a slight decline as well by recording a decrease of 4.38%. The total number handled was down to 1,088,615 vehicles from last year's figure of 1,138,463 vehicles.
December Performance and Strategic Goals
In December alone for the year under review Mawani achieved a cargo throughput increase of about9.27%. The total reached27 million tonnescompared with25 million tonnesin Decemberof the previous year. Container handling during this period rose by5.77% with711 thousand TEUs processed against672 thousand TEUs previously.
Mawani's achievements highlight its ongoing improvements in operational efficiency and infrastructure development which are crucial for fostering sustainable maritime growth within Saudi Arabia's economy and trade sectors.
This progress aligns with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy under Saudi Vision2030 aiming at enhancing Saudi Arabia’s position as an international logistics hub connecting three continents effectively supporting national export-import activities while bolstering economic growth prospects further into future years ahead.
