Masdar And Tadweer Group Collaborate On Abu Dhabi’s First Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project From Waste

Masdar and Tadweer Group have entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to advance Abu Dhabi's first commercial-scale Waste-to-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project. This plant aims to convert 500,000 tonnes of waste annually into SAF, utilising a hybrid production method. This involves renewable energy-powered electrolysis for green hydrogen and waste gasification to transform syngas into SAF through established chemical processes.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO at Masdar, emphasised the company's dedication to global energy transformation through partnerships and innovative solutions. He stated that this project will enhance the UAE’s leadership in sustainable aviation, supporting economic growth while reducing carbon emissions. Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer Group, highlighted the agreement as crucial for converting waste into valuable energy resources.

Abu Dhabi Launches Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project

Once operational, the project will cater to various markets, establishing Abu Dhabi as a regional SAF hub. It will aid in decarbonising an industry contributing over 18% of the UAE’s GDP in 2023, according to IATA data. SAF can potentially cut lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel, as per International Air Transport Association estimates.

The initiative aligns with several strategic national goals such as the UAE General Policy for SAF and Abu Dhabi’s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Policy. It also supports the National Hydrogen Strategy, Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy, and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. By converting waste into clean energy, it contributes to Tadweer Group's goal of diverting 80% of waste from landfills by 2030.

Masdar's expertise in renewable energy and hydrogen complements Tadweer Group’s proficiency in waste valorisation through various partnerships. This collaboration strengthens the UAE’s role as a leader in clean energy innovation. The project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s vision to lead globally in low-carbon fuel production, fostering synergies across renewable energy sectors.

The project's impact extends beyond environmental benefits by creating new value chains in waste management, green hydrogen, and renewable fuels. This initiative is pivotal for reinforcing Abu Dhabi's ambition to become a global leader in sustainable transport and low-carbon fuel production.
