Masdar Signs Strategic Agreements To Support Indonesia's Energy Transition During World Water Forum

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), the UAE's leading clean energy organization, has recently signed strategic agreements to support renewable energy projects in Indonesia. These agreements highlight the ongoing partnership between the UAE and Indonesia in developing the region's renewable energy sector while meeting Indonesia's current and future energy needs.The signing of these agreements took place during the 10th World Water Forum in Bali and was witnessed by key figures such as Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Special Envoy of H.H. the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs to Indonesia. Other notable attendees included Abdulla Salem Obaid Al Dhaheri, UAE Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia and ASEAN, General (Retd) Luhut Pandjaitan, Indonesia's Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment, Husin Bagis, the Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, and Prof. Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director-General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR).The agreements were signed by key representatives from Masdar, Pertamina Power Indonesia (Pertamina NRE), PLN Nusantara Power, and Nusantara Capital City Authority. These agreements signify a significant step forward in strengthening the strategic relationship between Masdar and its Indonesian partners.Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei expressed his satisfaction with the partnership between the UAE and Indonesia in promoting sustainable development with a focus on renewable energy. He commended Indonesia's climate leadership and emphasized the importance of clean, emissions-free energy in supporting communities' net-zero ambitions. Al Mazrouei also highlighted the UAE's commitment to tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030, as outlined in the historic UAE Consensus.Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, reiterated the UAE's dedication to advancing Indonesia's energy sector through a focus on renewables. He emphasized Masdar's commitment to forging partnerships that unlock transformative solutions for clean energy access. Al Ramahi expressed confidence that the joint efforts between Masdar and its Indonesian partners would position Indonesia as a regional leader in the global energy transition.The agreements include a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pertamina Power Indonesia for the development of solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects in Indonesia and abroad. This builds upon Masdar's existing partnership with Pertamina Geothermal Energy. The MoU represents a significant milestone in the strategic relationship between Masdar and Pertamina Power Indonesia.Masdar also signed a Joint Development Study Agreement with PLN Nusantara Power for Cirata Phase II, which aims to triple capacity by up to 500MW. This comes after the successful launch of the initial 145MW phase of the innovative floating PV project, which is the largest of its kind in the region.In line with supporting energy transition in urban environments, Masdar received approval to develop up to 2GW of renewable energy in Nusantara, starting with 200 megawatts as phase 1, in Indonesia's new capital city. This aligns with Masdar's proposal to meet the city's energy needs by 2045 through solar and wind projects.The partnership between Pertamina NRE and Masdar was praised by John Anis, CEO of Pertamina NRE. He highlighted Pertamina's role in Indonesia's energy transition and global expansion ambitions, along with Masdar's reputable experience in renewable energy development. Anis expressed confidence that this partnership would create more value and contribute significantly to combating global climate issues while strengthening collaboration between the UAE and Indonesia.Ruly Firmansyah, President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, expressed pride in partnering with Masdar to further develop the Cirata II initiative across Indonesia. This strategic alliance combines their expertise to unlock Indonesia's vast solar potential. Firmansyah emphasized their commitment to Indonesia's clean energy targets and net-zero goals, looking forward to delivering a greener and more sustainable future in collaboration with Masdar.Bambang Susantono, Chairman of Nusantara Capital City Authority, highlighted Indonesia's commitment to prioritizing sustainability in its new capital city of Nusantara. He welcomed Masdar's plan to develop a 200MW renewable energy plant for the city and appreciated Masdar's commitment to renewable energy up to 2GW by 2045. Prioritizing solar and wind energy positions the new capital as a model eco-city thriving on clean energy, showcasing how urban centers can be developed in harmony with nature.Masdar sees Indonesia and Southeast Asia as key investment destinations. The company has already developed the region's largest floating solar facility in Indonesia, capable of generating enough electricity to power 50,000 homes. Additionally, Masdar entered the geothermal energy sector through a strategic investment in Pertamina Geothermal Energy.With a target of achieving a renewable energy portfolio capacity of 100GW by 2030, Masdar is actively supporting the UAE Consensus to triple global renewable capacity by the end of this decade. Masdar aims to be a leading producer of green hydrogen by 2030. These agreements with Indonesian partners are crucial steps towards achieving these ambitious goals and driving the global energy transition forward.
