Masdar And Iberdrola Forge Significant Partnership For UK Offshore Wind Development

Masdar and Iberdrola have achieved significant milestones in their clean energy collaboration. They have co-invested in the UK's East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm, marking one of the largest offshore wind deals this decade. Additionally, they have fully energised their 476MW Baltic Eagle project in Germany. These efforts are crucial for meeting Europe and the UK's offshore wind targets and advancing their €15 billion strategic partnership.

The Masdar-Iberdrola alliance, established in December 2023, is a major bilateral partnership in clean energy. This collaboration aims to accelerate Europe's offshore wind development and reflects both companies' dedication to tripling global renewable capacity by 2030. The partnership focuses on key markets like the UK, Germany, and the US.

Masdar and Iberdrola's joint venture in the 1.4GW East Anglia THREE wind farm is among the largest offshore wind transactions of the decade. Each company holds a 50% stake and shares governance of this asset, which is vital for Europe's ambitious offshore wind goals. The transaction is expected to close soon as all conditions precedent have been met.

The financing for East Anglia THREE was secured on July 9th, with approximately £3.5 billion (around €4.1 billion) raised from 24 international banks. The facility was oversubscribed by 40%, making it one of the largest such transactions ever. It will cover a significant portion of the project's costs without adding debt to either partner's financial statements.

Located off Suffolk's coast, East Anglia THREE will become one of the world's largest offshore wind farms when it begins operations in Q4 2026. It will generate enough clean energy to power 1.3 million British homes. The project benefits from long-term revenue security through a 15-year CPI-linked Contract for Difference (CfD) awarded in UK Government auctions and a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon signed in 2024.

The Baltic Eagle project marks Masdar's first collaboration with Iberdrola and its inaugural venture in Germany. This 476MW wind farm supports Germany's clean energy goals by providing renewable energy to about 475,000 households while reducing carbon emissions by around 800,000 tonnes annually.

Commitment to Global Climate Goals

Iberdrola’s Executive Chairman Ignacio Galán stated, "Joining forces with Masdar in the East Anglia THREE offshore windfarm will allow Iberdrola to accelerate our strategic focus on the UK, where we are investing £24 billion to 2028 in transmission and distribution networks and in renewable energy, contributing to the delivery of the UK Government’s ambitious electrification plans."

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi emphasised their commitment: "This landmark partnership underscores our commitment to driving Europe’s energy transformation and advancing global climate goals." Both companies plan further investments in clean energy projects across Europe and other regions.

The anticipated total value of joint investments in offshore wind and green hydrogen under this partnership is estimated at €15 billion. Efforts are already underway to identify additional opportunities for future projects.
