Masdar City Reinforces Its Global Leadership In Sustainable Urban Development Through Innovation And Community Engagement
Masdar City, a sustainable urban community in Abu Dhabi, has unveiled its third Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report. This report highlights Masdar City's role as a model for sustainable urban development globally. The city aligns with the UAE's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. It combines sustainable infrastructure with a thriving Free Zone and a diverse community of innovators.
Masdar City is committed to fostering an ecosystem that promotes innovation and opportunity. Ahmed Baghoum, CEO of Masdar City, stated, "Masdar City serves as a living model for the successful integration of sustainability, innovation, and community." He emphasised their dedication to creating lasting economic, social, and environmental value.

The city's growth is driven by its people and community. In 2024, Masdar City focused on developing national talent and promoting diversity. The Emiratisation rate reached 54.7 percent, with women representing 31 percent of the workforce. Enhanced training initiatives have equipped employees with skills to drive sustainable innovation.
Masdar City's Women Entrepreneurship Programme expanded opportunities for women-led businesses. The Free Zone supported hundreds of local SMEs in scaling sustainably. Collaboration thrived across the city, with M42 advancing precision medicine and Khazna AUH6 Data Centre expanding sustainable data infrastructure.
Masdar City made significant progress in reducing environmental impact through various projects. In 2024, it achieved a 22.7 percent reduction in energy use intensity compared to the ASHRAE baseline. Initiatives avoided 5,518 tCO₂e emissions, equivalent to removing 1,285 gasoline-powered cars from roads for a year.
The city also recorded a 13.1 percent savings in potable water consumption against the Estidama PBRS baseline. Waste reduction efforts saw a 56.2 percent decrease through recycling, with 98.3 percent of construction waste diverted from landfills.
Innovation at the Core
Innovation drives Masdar City's mission to address current challenges while shaping future cities. The city piloted Hydroball technology in Masdar Park to optimise irrigation using IoT-enabled sensors for water savings. Upcoming development plans include Agrivoltaic projects at Connect Park to integrate renewable energy with urban agriculture.
The city's vibrant community engagement included over 300 stakeholder activations and cultural events fostering belonging. Hosting international delegations and organising local festivals strengthened its role as a hub where business, culture, and sustainability intersect.
Flagship Events Highlighting Sustainability
A series of flagship events showcased sustainable mobility and clean energy innovations at Masdar City. These included The Festival at Masdar City, BYD Electric Vehicles Launch, Innovation Day, The Hub by social launch—a sustainable food hall—and the Masdar City Community Run.
The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) advanced AI research aligned with the UAE’s national AI strategy. GEMS Founders School embedded sustainability into education from its first academic year.
Thirty buildings received green building certifications across twelve projects within Masdar City. This includes two net-zero energy buildings completed and three currently under construction.
Masdar City's commitment to sustainability continues to attract global businesses and entrepreneurs driving the transition to a low-carbon economy.
