Masdar Partners With Bapco Energies For Up To 2GW Wind Energy Projects In Bahrain

In a significant move towards bolstering the clean energy sector, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar has inked a pivotal agreement with Bapco Energies. This collaboration is set to explore the development and investment in wind projects within the Kingdom of Bahrain, boasting a potential capacity of up to 2 gigawatts (GW). This venture marks Masdar's strategic foray into the Bahraini market, setting a precedent as the first project of its kind in both the region and the Middle East.

The initiative aims to propel Bahrain towards its decarbonisation goals, particularly in critical industrial sectors, while also fostering the development of new market sectors. The Kingdom of Bahrain has set ambitious targets to slash emissions by 30 percent by 2035 and reach net-zero emissions by 2060, aligning with its National Energy Strategy.

Wind Energy Boost for Bahrain

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, expressed pride in supporting Bahrain's net-zero ambitions through Masdar's global expertise in wind energy projects. "As a global clean energy pioneer, Masdar will utilise its well-established expertise and track record in delivering wind energy projects globally, both onshore and offshore. It is a privilege to be supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain to achieve its net zero ambitions and power a more sustainable future," he stated.

Mark Thomas, Group Chief Executive Officer of Bapco Energies, highlighted the partnership's role in diversifying Bahrain's energy mix with cleaner sources. "Our partnership with Masdar demonstrates our commitment towards diversifying the Kingdom of Bahrain’s energy mix to include cleaner energy sources, underscoring our role as leaders in renewable energy development. This strategic collaboration signifies a bold step towards realising the ambitions outlined in Bahrain’s National Energy Strategy, propelling us closer to our net-zero goals. Together, we will pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come," Thomas remarked.

Masdar's portfolio includes several notable wind projects such as the 400MW Dumat Al Jandal wind farm in Saudi Arabia, the largest in the Middle East; the 630MW London Array offshore wind project in the United Kingdom, which powers half a million British homes; and the 103.5MW UAE Wind Program that captures low wind speeds at utility scale using innovative technology.

With an ambitious goal to achieve a renewable energy portfolio capacity of 100GW by 2030, Masdar is also committed to supporting The UAE Consensus's target to triple global renewables capacity by the end of this decade. Furthermore, Masdar aims to become a leading producer of green hydrogen by 2030, reinforcing its position as a key player in the global clean energy landscape.
