Masdar To Acquire Half Of Terra-Gen, Boosting Its Renewable Energy Footprint In The US

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, commonly known as Masdar, has made a significant move in the renewable energy sector by acquiring a 50% stake in Terra-Gen Power Holdings II, LLC (Terra-Gen), marking a pivotal step in its expansion within the United States. This strategic acquisition sees Energy Capital Partners (ECP) exiting its position entirely in Terra-Gen, while Igneo Infrastructure Partners maintains its 50% ownership. Terra-Gen stands out as one of the US's leading independent renewable energy producers, boasting an impressive portfolio of wind, solar, and energy storage facilities.

Terra-Gen's operational capacity includes approximately 2.4 GW of wind and solar power, alongside 5.1 GWh of energy storage across 32 renewable power sites, predominantly located in California and Texas. This acquisition is not just a testament to Masdar's commitment to enhancing its renewable energy footprint but also aligns with its ambitious goal to achieve a global renewable energy portfolio of at least 100 GW by 2030. Presently, Masdar's US portfolio encompasses utility-scale wind, solar, and storage assets with a generating capacity exceeding 1.4 GW.

Masdar Expands US Renewable Presence

The completion of this transaction is anticipated by the end of 2024, pending regulatory and customary approvals. This move is expected to bolster Masdar's efforts to scale up its renewable capacity and portfolio within the US market significantly. As one of the world's rapidly expanding clean energy companies, Masdar's investment in Terra-Gen underscores its strategic vision to lead in the global transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

With the global push for decarbonisation and sustainable energy sources gaining momentum, investments such as these are crucial for accelerating the transition to renewable energy. The collaboration between Masdar and Terra-Gen through this acquisition promises to enhance the development, financing, and operational capabilities of renewable projects, thereby contributing significantly to the global effort against climate change.
