Mark Julian Edwards Explores Transformative Perception Through Photography At Xposure 2024
On the inaugural day of the Xposure International Photography Festival (Xposure 2024) at Expo Centre Sharjah, British artist and portrait photographer Mark Julian Edwards captivated attendees with his presentation titled ‘The Lenses of Perception: Seeing the Potential in Others.’ The festival, which runs until March 5, saw Edwards, a TedX speaker and writer known for his unique blend of coaching and photography, delve into the significant role photography plays in recognizing and showcasing individuals' strengths.
Edwards emphasized the deep-seated human desire to be acknowledged and understood on a level beyond mere appearances. He argued that professional photography should strive to capture the essence of its subjects, thereby fulfilling this need. "By empowering people through their own uniqueness, we unlock an incredibly strong point in photography," he stated. This approach marries his Gallup-certified strengths coaching with his photographic passion, aiming to reveal more than just the external appearance of his subjects but to explore their personal stories and strengths.

The artist's work, which intersects photography, psychology, and coaching, introduces a novel perspective on self-perception and how we perceive others. Through anecdotes from his projects like the ‘Faces of Mallorca’ series, Edwards illustrated how focusing on individual strengths can enhance both the subject and the resulting photograph. He shared stories of working with a diverse array of subjects from various backgrounds, each story underscoring the transformative power of recognizing and capturing unique personal qualities through photography.
Edwards’ session also highlighted photography's role as a means for empowerment and self-discovery. He invited attendees to view both themselves and others through a lens that recognizes potential and strength, suggesting that this might be photography’s most significant capability. "The greatest need we have is to be seen, and through photography, we have the power to meet that need in the most beautiful and profound ways," he remarked.
The session concluded with Edwards offering practical advice on perception in both photography and life. He noted that seeing strengths in others can lead to being loved or remembered forever, emphasized that our perspective is not fixed, and highlighted how being seen by others can often have a more substantial impact than how we see ourselves. Additionally, he advised on choosing the right environment to best showcase individual uniqueness.
This presentation at Xposure 2024 not only showcased Edwards’ innovative approach to photography but also served as a reminder of the medium's powerful ability to connect us more deeply with ourselves and those around us. Through his lens, Edwards encourages a shift in perception that could ultimately lead to a more empathetic and understanding world.
