Eastern Region Launches Fourth Season Of Mangrove Honey Production

The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture's Eastern Region branch has launched the "Committed to working with youth to protect bees" initiative. This project, in collaboration with the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC), aims to create a conducive environment for bees and beekeepers in the mangrove forests of Danet Al-Rames.

Now in its fourth season, the mangrove honey production initiative involves more than 40 beekeepers and over 4,000 hives along the Arabian Gulf coast, specifically within the mangrove forests of Al-Qatif Governorate. Eng. Fahd Al-Hamzi, Branch Director, emphasised the significant role bees play in agriculture and the environment. He noted their importance in maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity.

Al-Hamzi also highlighted the necessity of empowering and engaging youths in beekeeping activities. He stressed the importance of initiatives aimed at protecting vegetation cover, improving agriculture and food quality, and sustaining the ecological system.

Eng. Mohammed Al-Asam, Director of the Ministry's Al-Qatif branch, met with participating beekeepers to review operational mechanisms and efforts to ensure successful honey production from mangrove trees. Al-Asam stated that the initiative aims to raise awareness about modern beekeeping methods, increase honey production, and enhance its quality.

This year has seen an increase in participation, with beekeepers from other regions of the Kingdom joining the initiative. The number of participants has doubled to over 40, with more than 4,000 hives expected to produce over 20 tons of mangrove honey this season.
