Manga Hokusai Manga Exhibition Launches At SAMoCA To Celebrate Cultural Exchange Between Saudi Arabia And Japan

The Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art (SAMoCA) in Jax District has opened the Manga Hokusai Manga exhibition. This event, organised with the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation, is a first for an Arab country. It marks a significant cultural exchange as 2025 will celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Japan's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Yasunari Morino, attended the inauguration. The exhibition showcases works by Katsushika Hokusai, a pivotal figure in traditional Japanese art. His collection, Hokusai Manga, first published in 1814, includes over 4,000 sketches across 15 volumes. These works depict daily life, landscapes, and whimsical creatures.

Hokusai's art gained popularity during the Edo period (1603–1868), with his volumes published until 1834. Even after his death in 1849, his influence persisted. His work continues to inspire artists worldwide and has significantly shaped modern manga art. The exhibition highlights this impact on contemporary visual arts.
