Manar Abu Dhabi Debuts In Al Ain With Light Installations Celebrating Culture

Manar Abu Dhabi, a project by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), has returned for its second edition. This year, it debuted in Al Ain on 1st November. The event, themed "The Light Compass," showcases light-based installations by six Emirati and international artists at Al Jimi and Al Qattara oases, both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The exhibition aims to highlight Abu Dhabi as a centre for cultural innovation and contemporary public art. It combines creativity, heritage, nature, and technology to inspire both communities and visitors. The event coincided with the start of Al Ain’s Traditional Handicrafts Festival, attracting thousands of visitors who experienced immersive light artworks.

Manar Abu Dhabi Launches in Al Ain

During the opening weekend, attendees were treated to captivating works by renowned artists such as Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Khalid Shafar, Maitha Hamdan, Abdalla Almulla, Ammar Al Attar, and Christian Brinkmann. These installations guided audiences through a sensory journey involving light, sound, and space. This reflects Abu Dhabi’s growing role as a global platform for artistic exchange.

A public talk titled "Public Art & the Al Ain Landscape" was held during the opening. Hosted by curator Alia Zaal Lootah, it provided insights into the creative vision behind the installations. The discussion also explored how public art celebrates the emirate’s cultural heritage.

Manar Abu Dhabi offers more than just visual art. At Al Qattara and Al Jimi oases, visitors can enjoy food and beverage pop-ups alongside guided tours and photography workshops. These activities provide opportunities to engage with art and culture within Al Ain’s historic landscapes.

This initiative continues to celebrate Abu Dhabi's cultural significance while fostering community engagement through art. By merging traditional elements with modern creativity, Manar Abu Dhabi enriches the region's artistic landscape.
