Mall Of The Emirates Introduces Barrierless Parking. Here’s What You Need To Know

Dubai is redefining the parking experience, and the latest upgrade at Mall of the Emirates is a glimpse into the future. The mall has officially launched a barrierless parking system, eliminating physical entry and exit barriers in favor of seamless, ticketless transactions.

This move follows a successful rollout at Deira City Centre, and it's expected to streamline parking, reduce congestion, and enhance customer convenience. However, as with any new system, there are rules, fees, and penalties that visitors must be aware of to avoid unnecessary fines.

Mall of the Emirates Introduces Barrierless Parking

The system uses advanced license plate recognition technology to track vehicles as they enter and exit the parking area. Here's how it operates:
- No barriers at entry or exit – Vehicles move in and out without stopping.
- License plate tracking – Cameras detect vehicle plates upon entry and calculate the parking duration.
- No tickets required – The system automatically records the visit.
- Automatic fee notifications – If charges apply, an SMS with a payment link is sent to the registered phone number.
- Multiple payment options – Visitors can pay via SMS, the Parkin app, credit/debit cards, or Apple Pay.

For UAE-registered vehicles, the system is fully automated, with notifications sent to the number linked to the car's registration. Rental cars will have fees directed to the rental company or the registered owner.

Parking Fee Structure: What's Free, What's Not

Weekdays (Monday–Friday):
First 4 hours: Free
- 4–5 hours: AED 20
- 5–6 hours: AED 40
- 6–7 hours: AED 60
- 7–8 hours: AED 100
- 8+ hours: AED 150

Weekends (Saturday & Sunday):
Completely free—no charges apply regardless of duration.
Time limit: Parking must be cleared before closing hours to avoid additional fines.

How to Avoid Paying for Parking?

MOE offers several ways to validate parking for free:
- Spend AED 150 or more at the mall and validate receipts at customer service.
- VOX Cinemas or Ski Dubai visitors get two extra hours free (on top of the four-hour free allowance).
- Use valet parking, which automatically includes parking validation.
- People of Determination (PoD) can validate their parking at customer service for free access.

What Happens If You Don't Pay?

Visitors have three days to settle any outstanding parking fees. If payment is not made within this period, the following actions take place:
- Day 1–2: SMS reminders are sent.
- Day 3: A phone call reminder is issued.
- After 3 days: A AED 150 fine is imposed under Dubai's standard parking violation policy.
For those who frequently pass through MOE's parking lot without stopping, a AED 3 charge applies per pass-through.

Additional Fines and Penalties
- Unauthorized overnight parking: AED 200 per day.
- Parking in a People of Determination (PoD) space without a valid permit: AED 1,000 fine.
- Using or displaying an expired PoD permit: AED 1,000 fine.

Majid Al Futtaim (MAF), the developer behind Mall of the Emirates, introduced barrierless parking as part of a broader initiative to enhance efficiency, reduce congestion, and eliminate ticket-related delays. This system is expected to:
- Reduce waiting times at entry and exit points.
- Eliminate the hassle of lost tickets or forgotten validations.
- Improve overall traffic flow within the mall's parking areas.

Despite the upgrade, MAF has confirmed that parking fees remain unchanged, and the focus is purely on improving the visitor experience.

With license plate tracking and automatic payment notifications, concerns about data security are natural. According to MAF, all vehicle and personal data is:
- Securely stored and protected.
- Not shared with third parties.
- Retained only as long as the car remains registered.
- Transaction records archived for three years for auditing purposes.

For further inquiries or technical issues, motorists can contact MOE's customer service desk or call 800-Park (7275).

Dubai is rapidly transitioning to smart, automated infrastructure, and the move to barrierless parking at one of the city's busiest malls is a sign of things to come.

While some drivers may need time to adjust, the long-term benefits—less congestion, no ticket misplacement, and a seamless exit process—make this a welcome innovation.

If Dubai's leading malls continue this trend, parking in the city may soon become entirely digital, faster, and friction-free.
