Malaysia's Leader Engages With Al-Azhar's Grand Imam On Fostering Global Harmony

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, welcomed His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders (MCE), along with his delegation. The Prime Minister expressed Malaysia's profound gratitude for the Grand Imam's significant efforts in promoting dialogue, tolerance, and coexistence.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that Malaysia consistently aligns with the views and positions of His Eminence the Grand Imam. These views serve as a guiding principle for Malaysia in addressing various issues concerning the Islamic world. He emphasised Malaysia's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Al-Azhar, rooted in a shared belief in spreading tolerance and coexistence.

The Prime Minister praised His Eminence for embodying values that resonate deeply within Malaysia's diverse society. He also lauded the Muslim Council of Elders for its efforts in fostering peace and promoting dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. This recognition underscores Malaysia's appreciation for initiatives that enhance societal harmony.

His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb expressed his deep appreciation for the leadership and people of Malaysia. He commended Malaysia's model of diversity, plurality, respect, and acceptance of others. His Eminence acknowledged Malaysia's supportive stance on issues important to the Islamic nation, particularly the Palestinian cause.

The Grand Imam highlighted several initiatives by the Muslim Council of Elders aimed at promoting dialogue and tolerance. Among these is the historic signing of the Document on Human Fraternity and establishing the Faith Pavilion at COP28, a first in Conference of the Parties history. These initiatives reflect a commitment to fostering global understanding.

His Eminence also noted significant efforts by the Council in collaboration with international organisations like the United Nations to uphold justice and equality. The focus on youth and women through various initiatives further demonstrates this commitment to inclusive values.

Educational Engagements

During his visit to Darul Quran JAKIM institution, His Eminence observed a strong interest in Quran memorisation among students. He praised Malaysian students studying at Al-Azhar University, whose numbers exceed 7,000. These students are seen as exemplary models of moderation and resistance to extremist ideologies.

The Grand Imam described these students as ambassadors of Al-Azhar's enlightened approach within Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Their presence reinforces Al-Azhar’s influence in promoting moderate Islamic teachings across different regions.
