Maktoum Bin Mohammed Leads UAE Delegation To Inaugural GCC-European Union Summit In Brussels

The first GCC-European Union Summit took place in Brussels, with H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum leading the UAE delegation. This summit, involving heads of state from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU), represents a pivotal moment for enhancing collaboration and tackling shared challenges.

H.H. Sheikh Maktoum highlighted the summit as a platform for constructive dialogue aimed at mutual development. Sheikh Maktoum emphasised the UAE's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the EU. Under President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visionary leadership, Sheikh Maktoum reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to exploring new avenues for growing the GCC-European partnership. Expanding cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and social areas will benefit both regions' peoples and create new pathways for progress.

H.H. welcomed initiatives to boost trade, tourism, and cultural exchange with the EU. He praised the EU’s significant role in addressing regional and global challenges, stressing joint efforts' importance in ensuring security, stability, and peace in the Middle East while tackling humanitarian concerns.

Key Figures at the Summit

The summit featured an opening speech by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar and President of the 44th session of the Supreme Council of the GCC. Other notable speakers included Jassim Mohammed Al Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the GCC; Charles Michel, President of the European Council; and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

An official delegation accompanied H.H., including Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation; Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade; Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State; Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs; and Mohamed Al Sahlawi, UAE Ambassador to Belgium.

UAE-EU Strategic Partnership

The UAE is a key strategic partner of the EU in fostering sustainable development and enhancing regional stability in the Middle East. Both sides share strong ties in trade, investment, tourism, scientific research, artificial intelligence (AI), technology sustainability initiatives like green transformation and renewable energy projects.

In 2023 alone total trade between GCC countries reached €170 billion making it second-largest trading partner after China within this region apart from economic cooperation partnerships also encompass
