Makkah's Central Area Urban Transformation Plans Enhance Worship Experience And Sustainability

The Central Area of Makkah, a densely populated region in the Islamic world, spans just six square kilometers. Despite its small size, it accommodates a population density six times the average. During peak seasons, nearly two million worshippers gather here in a single night. This has led the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites to focus on urban development.

To address these challenges, the commission has outlined plans for urban transformation in six key locations. These include Ajyad Street, the square near Ibrahim Al Khalil Street and its extension, Hijra Street, the Al-Shubaikah area, and the eastern courtyards of the Grand Mosque. The aim is to enhance pedestrian areas by 127% and create over 30,000 square meters of shaded spaces.

Makkah's Central Area Focuses on Sustainability

Transport capacity around the Grand Mosque has been significantly improved. The King Abdulaziz Gate Station's capacity increased from 7,000 to 18,000 passengers per hour. Additionally, prayer areas behind the Clock Towers are being developed to cover 70,000 square meters and accommodate over 60,000 worshippers.

Efforts to reduce heat in these areas include applying reflective coatings that lower surface temperatures by 20°C. The commission is also addressing visual distortions in several locations and activating a guidance system for effective crowd management during peak times.

The commission has made significant progress in developing over 70% of the Central Area's master map. This map integrates more than 60 data layers to support efficient management and operational planning during peak seasons.

These comprehensive plans aim to improve traffic flow and enhance the overall experience for worshippers visiting Makkah. By prioritising urban development and infrastructure improvements, the Royal Commission seeks to accommodate the growing number of visitors while maintaining safety and comfort.
