Makkah Transport Centre Streamlines Pilgrim Movement From Mina To Grand Mosque During Hajj
The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites (RCMC) orchestrated the Ifadah phase from Mina to the Grand Mosque, a crucial part of the Hajj rituals. This phase is known for its high density and complexity. The RCMC utilised an integrated operational system that included organised shuttle transport, phased grouping, and strategic crowd distribution over time and space.
Shuttle operations were meticulously planned, with dedicated lanes for buses separate from pedestrian paths. A fleet of 100 buses, each accommodating 125 passengers, was deployed. This setup allowed for the transportation of up to 20,000 people per hour, reducing travel time to just 20 minutes and enabling swift performance of Tawaf Al-Ifadah.

In collaboration with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), a structured system was implemented for grouping pilgrims onto the Haramain High-Speed Railway. Coloured cards were used to assign boarding times accurately. This method effectively managed crowd movement and maintained balanced density at stations.
An interactive map detailing pilgrim service routes between Mina and the Grand Mosque was also activated. It outlined six designated routes, providing operational flexibility for real-time adjustments based on current conditions. This adaptability ensures smooth transitions and efficient management during peak times.
The center serves as a pivotal hub within RCMC’s system, supported by coordinated planning among various agencies. Through proactive strategies and real-time crowd management, it significantly enhances the Hajj experience by improving transportation services across holy sites.
The operational strategy included phased grouping and strategic distribution of crowd density across time and space. This approach ensured that pilgrims could perform their rituals efficiently without unnecessary delays or congestion.
Overall, these efforts by the RCMC have played a vital role in streamlining transportation during Hajj. By employing advanced planning techniques and leveraging technology, they have improved both safety and efficiency for pilgrims undertaking this sacred journey.
