Streamlining Luggage Handling For Pilgrims: The Makkah Route Initiative

The Ministry of Interior’s Makkah Route Initiative, part of the Pilgrim Experience Program under Saudi Vision 2030, is dedicated to streamlining travel procedures for pilgrims from Ankara Esenboga International Airport to the Kingdom. This initiative ensures that luggage is delivered directly to pilgrims' accommodations in Makkah and Madinah, eliminating the need for baggage collection upon arrival.

Recognising that luggage is a constant concern for travellers, especially during Hajj, the Makkah Route Initiative employs advanced technology to facilitate a smooth and efficient luggage handling process. The journey begins at the airport's baggage drop-off point. This year, RFID technology was introduced, enabling quick electronic reading of pilgrim data.

A dedicated team sorts pilgrims by their final destinations in Makkah or Madinah and assigns each hotel a unique code and colour for faster identification. Fifteen minutes before the plane lands, designated luggage transport vehicles are pre-positioned within the airport to ensure timely handling.

To guarantee zero loss of luggage, a four-point inspection system is implemented. The first inspection occurs upon arrival, with the technology capable of reading 400 bags in just 20 seconds. After clearing Saudi customs, the luggage undergoes a second check.

The luggage is then sorted by colour code onto designated carts for transport. A third inspection takes place after loading, followed by a final check before reaching the hotels. In rare cases of lost luggage, the system allows for immediate identification and swift recovery.

This initiative not only enhances the overall pilgrim experience but also aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goals of leveraging technology to improve services. By ensuring that pilgrims can focus on their spiritual journey without worrying about their belongings, the Makkah Route Initiative exemplifies efficient and thoughtful planning.
