Makkah Transforms Historical And Cultural Sites Through Comprehensive Development Strategy
Makkah is experiencing a significant transformation in preserving and developing its historical and cultural sites. This initiative, led by the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites (RCMC), aims to protect the city's rich heritage while showcasing it in a modern way. The goal is to enhance the experience for visitors and pilgrims by reflecting Makkah's deep religious and cultural significance.
In 2023, notable achievements included the inauguration of the Hira Cultural District and the Revelation Exhibition. These projects combined religious heritage with advanced technology. Additionally, the Jabal Al-Rahmah site saw improvements through infrastructure upgrades and better visitor services. These developments highlight Makkah's commitment to blending tradition with modernity.

The RCMC has identified 98 historical and cultural sites in Makkah, with 64 prioritized for development. The selection criteria included religious and historical importance, authenticity, uniqueness, and proximity to the Grand Mosque. This strategic approach ensures that the most significant sites receive attention first, preserving their legacy for future generations.
In early 2024, Ain Zubaidah was developed in collaboration with Kidana Development Company. Enhancements included a one-kilometer hiking trail, recreational areas, and multimedia displays highlighting its historical value. This project exemplifies how partnerships can effectively bring historical sites to life for visitors.
By 2025, further efforts expanded with the rehabilitation of Al-Bay’a Mosque and the launch of a popular food street. Upgrades were also made to the Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques Architecture. These initiatives aim to enrich visitors' experiences by offering diverse attractions that cater to different interests.
A significant addition was opening the International Museum of the Prophet’s Biography and Islamic Civilization. This museum provides interactive exhibits in multiple languages about Prophet Muhammad's life (peace be upon him) and Islamic civilization's broader legacy. It serves as an educational hub for visitors worldwide.
Strategic Vision for Sustainability
The Grand Mosque Library underwent enhancements as part of these efforts. It houses over 350,000 books and manuscripts, serving as a valuable resource for scholars and visitors alike. Public parks and pedestrian walkways across Makkah were also revitalized to create more inviting spaces for residents and tourists.
RCMC CEO Saleh Al-Rasheed emphasized that these initiatives are part of an integrated strategic vision. He stated: "These efforts ensure sustainability and activation of Makkah’s historical sites." Engaging multilingual content connects this heritage to broader cultural destinations throughout Makkah.
This comprehensive strategy ultimately enhances Makkah’s religious, historical, and cultural identity while deepening visitors' experiences. By presenting this heritage engagingly, Makkah continues to be a destination that resonates deeply with all who visit.
