Majlis Gatherings Serve As Vital Platforms To Promote Emirati Values And Community Spirit
Following the declaration by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan naming 2025 as the "Year of Community," there has been a noticeable rise in activities by social and charitable organisations in Abu Dhabi. These groups have quickly initiated various community programmes and events, focusing on traditional Majlis gatherings that embody the essence of the national campaign.
Researcher Mohammed Saeed Al Rumaithi emphasised that the UAE President’s yearly initiatives consistently spark ambition and creativity, serving as platforms to strengthen Emirati values. He noted these efforts inspire younger generations to adopt a lifestyle rooted in generosity, renewal, ambition, unity, and social cohesion. Al Rumaithi described the Year of Community as a forward-thinking initiative aimed at instilling essential values and principles while reinforcing national identity.

Al Rumaithi highlighted traditional Majlis gatherings as powerful tools for achieving the initiative's goals. "These gatherings promote a culture of volunteerism, solidarity, and giving. They are rooted in authentic Emirati traditions of hospitality, kindness, generosity, and service. They also play a key role in fostering family bonds and enhancing social cooperation—vital for building a strong, cohesive, and prosperous nation."
The Majlis gatherings are known for their open-door policy where no one in need is turned away. This approach has made the UAE an exemplary model of societal unity and engagement. The attentiveness and swift response to public concerns by UAE rulers further enhance this model.
The Majlis of the Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, has been referenced in numerous foreign accounts. British explorer Wilfred Thesiger wrote about his meetings with Sheikh Zayed in 1945 and 1952 under a Ghaf tree used as a Majlis at Qasr Al Muwaiji in Al Ain. Additionally, Sheikh Zayed Majlis at Oasis Hospital is recognised as a historical landmark featuring a photo exhibition documenting city development.
Al Rumaithi stated that the Majlis is integral to Emirati social, cultural, and economic life. Its enduring role is preserved through the dedication of leaders, institutions, and communities. In recognition of its cultural importance, Majlis was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015.
Community Services Offered by Majlises
According to official statistics, Abu Dhabi hosts 68 majlises: 30 in Abu Dhabi city and suburbs, 32 in Al Ain region, and 6 in Al Dhafra. These centres provide community services like hosting weddings and condolences. They also offer multi-purpose halls with libraries for reading services and venues for seminars, cultural events, and community activities.
The strength of a nation lies not only in its resources but also in its people's collective spirit and unity behind their leadership," said Al Rumaithi. The Year of Community aims to nurture compassion among all segments of Emirati society while reinforcing national identity.
