Madinah Region Highlights Importance Of Local Action For Achieving Sustainable Development Goals At UN Event
Fahad Albulihshi, the Mayor of Madinah Region and CEO of the Al Madinah Region Development Authority, recently opened an event at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The event focused on the importance of local initiatives in achieving global sustainability goals. Titled "Act Local, Accelerate Global: Advancing Inclusive, Science- and Evidence-based Solutions for SDG Localization in the Arab Region," it was part of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2025.
The forum highlighted the necessity for inclusive and data-driven methods to effectively localize Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring no one is excluded. Albulihshi emphasized that cities are tasked with implementing 65% of these goals. He noted that urban data's availability and quality pose significant challenges, underscoring the need for global frameworks to guide sustainable local development.

Al Madinah Region Development Authority presented its Atlas of Sustainable Development for Madinah and its neighborhoods. This initiative, along with a report on building a risk-resilient future, supports sustainable development decision-making. These efforts align with Saudi Vision 2030, highlighting their importance in guiding urban growth.
The event also featured dialogue sessions that examined global frameworks for sustainable and resilient urban development. Discussions included strategies to create value for cities through data-driven trends. These sessions aimed to explore how cities can leverage data to enhance their sustainability efforts.
The event was organized by Al Madinah Region Development Authority in collaboration with several international organizations. These included the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia Section (UCLG-MEWA), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and the World Council on City Data.
These partnerships underscore the collaborative nature of addressing sustainability challenges. By working together, these organizations aim to develop comprehensive strategies that support local governments in achieving their sustainability objectives.
This gathering at the UN headquarters served as a platform to discuss how local actions can contribute significantly to global sustainability targets. It reinforced the idea that while global frameworks are essential, localized efforts are crucial in making tangible progress towards achieving SDGs.
