Madinah Joins UNESCO Creative Cities Network For Gastronomy On World Cities Day
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recognised Madinah as part of its Creative Cities Network for Gastronomy. This makes Madinah the second city in Saudi Arabia, after Buraidah, to achieve this status. The recognition highlights Madinah's growing reputation as a centre for culinary excellence.
This achievement is the result of coordinated national efforts led by the Culinary Arts Commission, working alongside various Saudi organisations. Key contributors included the Madinah Region Principality, Al Madinah Region Development Authority, National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and Madinah Region Municipality. Their collaboration ensured that UNESCO's stringent criteria were met.

Madinah is celebrated for its rich culinary heritage, drawing millions of visitors each year. Positioned on key trade and pilgrimage routes, the city boasts a diverse cultural and commercial landscape. Its unique food culture is influenced by its fertile volcanic soil and a blend of various civilizations' traditions.
The city's inclusion in UNESCO's network marks an important milestone for its future. It enhances Madinah's international presence and aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 goals to strengthen the Kingdom's global leadership. This recognition places Madinah firmly on the map of global culinary excellence.
Local businesses specialising in culinary arts played a crucial role in preparing the nomination file. Their involvement ensured that all necessary requirements were fulfilled to meet UNESCO's standards. This strong collaboration was essential in achieving this prestigious designation.
Madinah's distinct gastronomic traditions are deeply rooted in its history and geography. The city's fertile volcanic soil contributes to its rich agricultural produce, which forms the basis of its unique flavours. These elements combine to create a tapestry of tastes that reflect the city's diverse influences.
This international recognition not only highlights Madinah's culinary achievements but also supports its aspirations under Saudi Vision 2030. By enhancing its global presence, Madinah aims to solidify its position as a leader in culinary arts on the world stage.
