Madinah Central Area: Model For Sustainable Urban Development Supporting Millions Of Visitors

Madinah’s central area is becoming a key focus of urban development under Saudi Vision 2030. Authorities plan projects that improve comfort and safety for visitors, while keeping the site’s religious character. These plans combine modern infrastructure with Islamic heritage, so services, movement, and facilities can support growing visitor numbers throughout the year.

The Prophet’s Mosque lies at the heart of this central district and draws millions of visitors annually. People arrive from many countries to pray there, especially during Hajj and after performing Umrah. Many visitors also tour Madinah’s historic locations and religious landmarks, which are closely linked to early Islamic history.

The central area offers wide open plazas and shaded walkways that support movement around the Prophet’s Mosque. Luxury hotels line these spaces, alongside markets and restaurants serving international cuisines. This mix gives visitors access to varied services while reflecting Islamic heritage in the surrounding architecture and urban layout.

Large plazas also connect the central district with nearby neighbourhoods, which helps manage pedestrian flows. Among the key routes is the Quba Walking Trail, which links the Prophet’s Mosque directly with Quba Mosque. The corridor includes electric carts, bicycle lanes, rest areas, and service zones that support visitors along the way.

Urban projects in the central area target sustainability and a higher quality of life for residents and pilgrims. Plans focus on integrated design that respects the sanctity of the Prophet’s Mosque. At the same time, they enhance public spaces, transport links, and support services to create safer, more comfortable conditions for all users.

One of the main schemes is the Rua Al Madinah project, which is located east of the Prophet’s Mosque. The development covers around 1.5 million square metres and is described as the largest in the region. It combines hospitality, commercial, and cultural functions within a single planned urban area.

Rua Al Madinah is set to provide more than 47,000 hotel rooms, in addition to commercial units, museums, and cultural districts. The plan includes Internet of Things applications, artificial intelligence tools, and environmental monitoring. Energy-efficient systems, interactive wayfinding, security technologies, and sustainable transport networks are also part of the project’s design.

Together, the central area upgrades and the Rua Al Madinah development present a model of sustainable urban planning around the Prophet’s Mosque. They aim to preserve Islamic heritage while using modern technology to support worshippers and visitors. These efforts seek to ensure Madinah can welcome increasing numbers of people throughout the year.
