Macron And Al-Sharaa Meet To Discuss Gradual Lifting Of Sanctions On Syria
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa to the Élysée Palace in Paris. This marked Al-Sharaa's inaugural visit to Europe. The leaders engaged in discussions and later addressed a joint press conference. Macron expressed France's readiness to gradually lift European sanctions on Syria, contingent upon the interim Syrian government's commitment to reform and change.
Macron emphasised that if Syria continues on its path of reform, France would take further steps. These include lifting more European sanctions, collaborating with American partners for similar actions, and working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The aim is to create a regional framework for the return of Syrians, especially skilled professionals.

The French President highlighted the importance of delaying the US withdrawal from Syria. He warned that an early withdrawal could jeopardise both regional and international security. Macron stressed that it is crucial for all parties, including the United States, to support efforts for return and reconstruction while postponing troop withdrawal due to ongoing security threats.
"France continues to view Daesh (ISIS) as the greatest terrorist threat," Macron stated. He underscored that security cooperation with Syria would be vital in the upcoming phase. This cooperation is essential to address shared security concerns effectively.
Ahmad Al-Sharaa expressed Syria's openness to dialogue and cooperation with regional and international entities. He mentioned that Syria has initiated indirect negotiations with Israel aimed at reducing tensions and preventing further conflict.
Regarding sanctions, Al-Sharaa described them as "legally and morally unjustified." He explained that these sanctions were initially imposed on a former regime that no longer exists. "These sanctions are no longer directed at a defunct regime but are affecting the Syrian people," he noted, adding his belief that President Macron understands the consequences of continuing this policy.
Reconstruction Efforts
Al-Sharaa also addressed reconstruction efforts in Syria. He emphasised that rebuilding goes beyond funding or infrastructure; it involves restoring trust within Syrian society. "We discussed France's contribution to the reconstruction efforts," he concluded, highlighting the importance of international support in rebuilding Syria.
The meeting between Macron and Al-Sharaa signifies a potential shift in relations between Europe and Syria. Both leaders appear committed to exploring avenues for cooperation while addressing pressing issues such as sanctions, security, and reconstruction.
