Maaden Becomes First Middle East Member Of International Council On Mining And Metals For Sustainable Development
The Saudi Arabian Mining Company, known as Maaden, has become a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). This organisation focuses on enhancing the role of mining and metals in sustainable development. Maaden is now ICMM's first member from the Middle East, joining other global leaders committed to high standards in their operations.
Maaden's membership aligns with its goal to make mining a key part of Saudi Arabia's economy. The company aims to build a technology-driven, people-focused organisation. Sustainability is central to Maaden's growth strategy, addressing challenges like water scarcity in the Middle East on global platforms.

By joining ICMM, Maaden agrees to adhere to the council’s Mining Principles. These principles outline Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices for the industry through 40 performance expectations. They apply at asset level and involve third-party assurance and validation across approximately 650 sites in 50 countries.
Maaden CEO Bob Wilt expressed pride in becoming ICMM's first regional member. "We are extremely proud to announce our membership of ICMM today, and even more so as the inaugural regional member," he said. He emphasised the importance of being part of meaningful discussions about the future of mining.
Maaden aims to lead changes in mining with innovative ideas and actions. The company seeks to ensure that mining contributes long-term value to economies and societies worldwide. This vision supports Saudi Arabia's ambition to play a significant role in the global minerals sector.
ICMM President and CEO Rohitesh Dhawan welcomed Maaden’s involvement. "With Saudi Arabia poised to play a pivotal role in the global minerals sector in the years ahead, we look forward to Maaden’s active participation in ICMM’s work and its contribution to advancing sustainable mining practices both in Saudi Arabia and across the region."
Maaden’s strategic focus includes enhancing resource sustainability within Saudi Arabia. The company brings its expertise in tackling sustainability challenges unique to the region, such as water scarcity, into international discussions.
This membership reflects Maaden's commitment to shaping a prosperous future for mining alongside other companies sharing similar goals. Through collaboration with ICMM members, Maaden aims to contribute significantly towards sustainable development within the industry.
