Louvre Abu Dhabi Hits Milestone With Over 1.2 Million Visitors In 2023
In 2023, Louvre Abu Dhabi marked a significant uptick in its visitor count, welcoming over 1.2 million guests. This surge is attributed to a blend of factors, including an array of notable exhibitions, an increase in activities at the Children's Museum, and the success of various educational programs. The museum's outdoor events also played a crucial role in drawing in the crowds. A noteworthy 72 percent of these visitors were international tourists from key markets such as Russia, India, France, the USA, China, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, and the UK, while the remaining 28 percent were UAE residents. Additionally, the museum was a choice destination for over 500 officials, dignitaries, artists, and celebrities.
March 2024 marked a landmark achievement for Louvre Abu Dhabi as it crossed the 5 million visitor threshold since its inauguration. This milestone underscores its significance as a cultural beacon on a global scale. Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, the Under-Secretary of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, expressed immense pride in the museum's growing appeal. Manuel Rabaté, the museum's Director, highlighted its role in showcasing Abu Dhabi's rich cultural landscape and fostering intercultural dialogue.

The year saw the introduction of five exceptional exhibitions at Louvre Abu Dhabi, covering themes from Indian cinema to Islamic design and children's art. The museum also enhanced its collection through new acquisitions and loans of works by renowned artists like Picasso and Fragonard. A special loan from the National Museum of Archaeology and Musée du Louvre celebrated UAE-Malta diplomatic ties.
The Children's Museum witnessed significant engagement, with exhibitions drawing over 231,000 visitors. It has become an educational hub that nurtures young minds' appreciation for art and culture. Educational initiatives saw participation from over 45,000 students and teachers—a 75 percent increase from the previous year—through innovative programs like "Schools Take Over the Museum."
Louvre Abu Dhabi also curated a diverse array of 31 cultural events ranging from talks to film festivals. Activities such as kayaking and yoga sessions offered unique experiences of the museum. On the digital front, an updated museum app featuring Artificial Intelligence saw a 46 percent jump in downloads from the previous year to 123,720 in 2023. The launch of podcast series related to exhibitions and a children's series in Arabic further engaged visitors.
The success Louvre Abu Dhabi has achieved in attracting visitors, expanding its collection, and offering enriching educational and cultural experiences speaks volumes about its commitment to excellence.
