LODD And 7X Conduct First Autonomous Drone Parcel Delivery Trial In Abu Dhabi

The aviation technology company LODD, along with 7X, an investment group in trade and logistics, has initiated the first test flight for drone parcel deliveries in Abu Dhabi. This marks a significant development in the emirate's logistics sector. The trial is part of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council's strategy, supported by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), to enhance smart mobility solutions.

Conducted under the supervision of the General Civil Aviation Authority and the Integrated Transport Centre, this initiative is part of a broader plan to enable smart mobility through ADIO’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry cluster. The project aims to localise production, develop infrastructure for the future, and strengthen Abu Dhabi’s status as a global hub for innovation.

First Drone Delivery Trial Launched in Abu Dhabi

Omran Malek, who leads ADIO’s SAVI Cluster, expressed pride in supporting advanced logistics technologies that bolster Abu Dhabi’s role as an innovation centre. "This pilot is a powerful example of the kind of local partnerships and forward-thinking strategies that drive long-term economic and infrastructure value for the Emirate," he stated.

The initial test flight took place in Khalifa City. It showcased how drones can autonomously deliver parcels by transporting a simulated package from a post office to a designated drop zone using a secure winch-based system. This demonstration highlights the potential for integrating drones into urban delivery networks.

Humaid Saber Al Hameli from the Integrated Transport Centre emphasised that airspace safety remains a priority. He noted ongoing efforts to develop regulatory frameworks that support unmanned aerial systems' integration into Abu Dhabi’s transport ecosystem. "We are committed to providing a secure and adaptive regulatory environment that keeps pace with innovation," Al Hameli added.

This pilot trial showcases collaboration between public and private sectors, representing progress towards smart aerial mobility in Abu Dhabi. The emirate aims to maintain its competitive edge globally by fostering sustainable mobility and future-focused technologies.

Advancements in Logistics

Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD, highlighted how autonomous drones add scalability to urban delivery networks. "With one operator able to manage multiple deliveries simultaneously, the system brings a new level of scalability and responsiveness to the logistics chain," he explained.

Tariq Al Wahedi, Group CEO of 7X, remarked on their commitment to next-generation logistics solutions aligning with UAE’s vision for smart mobility. By incorporating drone technology into EMX’s logistics network, they aim to enhance operational reach and speed while adapting to evolving commerce demands.

Future Prospects

This pilot represents just the beginning of plans to deploy drone-based logistics services across Abu Dhabi. With supportive regulations and infrastructure readiness, the emirate is positioning itself as a leader in autonomous air mobility within the region.
