Saudi Arabia's Transport Minister Unveils Programme To Localize Railway Manufacturing And Boost Economic Growth
Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has introduced a new initiative in partnership with the Local Content and Government Procurement Authority (LCGPA). This program is designed to bolster the railway sector within Saudi Arabia by focusing on local manufacturing. The aim is to ensure business continuity and support economic growth through localization efforts.
The program was unveiled by Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser during the Saudi Rail Conference and Exhibition in Riyadh. It seeks to provide investment opportunities for local suppliers and manufacturers, enhancing local content while promoting economic diversification. The minister highlighted that this initiative represents a collaboration between SAR and the private sector, alongside LCGPA.

The initiative aims to offer investment opportunities worth over SAR 15 billion by 2030. It is part of SAR's strategy to strengthen national industry and local content, demonstrating its dedication to empowering Saudi small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the railway sector. This effort is expected to significantly contribute to achieving the local content goals outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.
SAR plans to achieve these objectives through various supplier development areas. These include adopting international best practices to improve operational efficiency and enhancing production methods to increase capacity and quality. The program also focuses on developing local human capital, which is crucial for sustaining growth in the railway industry.
A key outcome of this program is the creation of up to 3,000 job opportunities for Saudi citizens through investment prospects. By localizing the railway industry, SAR aims to foster a skilled workforce that can meet the demands of this growing sector. This aligns with broader national goals of reducing unemployment and increasing workforce participation among Saudis.
The initiative underscores SAR's commitment to supporting SMEs in becoming competitive players within the railway industry. By providing substantial investment opportunities, it encourages local businesses to engage more actively in this sector, thereby contributing to economic diversification.
This collaborative effort between SAR, LCGPA, and private entities highlights a strategic approach towards achieving sustainable development within Saudi Arabia's railway industry. By focusing on localization, it not only supports economic growth but also ensures long-term business continuity in this vital sector.
