King Abdulaziz Life Panel Highlights Key Moments From Early Years To Unification
The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) hosted an evening panel discussion on the life of King Abdulaziz, focusing on early personal milestones, including the first known photograph of the future ruler during the beginning of a political and military journey.
The event featured historian Dr. Saad Al-Arifi as the main speaker, with moderation by Dr. Mohammed Al-Abdullatif. Darah presented the session as part of wider efforts to document the history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the legacy of its founder, whose work led to the country’s unification.

Dr. Al-Arifi outlined the biography of King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, explaining that King Abdulaziz was born in Al-Hukm Palace in Riyadh in 1293 AH (1876 CE). King Abdulaziz grew up under the care of both parents, and received early teaching from Sheikh Abdullah Al-Kharji, who taught reading and writing, before memorising the entire holy Quran with Sheikh Mohammed bin Musaybeh.
The speaker described how King Abdulaziz moved to Kuwait in 1311 AH (1893 CE) and stayed there for about nine years. During this period, King Abdulaziz followed regional political events, attended political councils, and developed early political awareness, which helped shape a strong leadership personality that later influenced key decisions affecting the Arabian Peninsula.
Dr. Al-Arifi also highlighted the physical and personal abilities of King Abdulaziz. According to the presentation, King Abdulaziz was tall, strong and physically fit, and from the age of seven showed skill in horsemanship and archery. King Abdulaziz also displayed notable intelligence and signs of leadership during childhood, which observers later linked to later achievements.
Key historical stages were reviewed, including the recapture of Riyadh in 1319 AH. Dr. Al-Arifi explained that King Abdulaziz began the campaign from Kuwait and regained Riyadh after the famous Battle of Al-Masmak. The lecture then moved to the story behind the first photograph, describing a visit by French and Russian representatives to Kuwait, their meeting with King Abdulaziz, and the hospitality offered to them at King Abdulaziz’s residence there, during which the picture was taken.
| Year (AH) | Year (CE) | Key event in life of King Abdulaziz |
|---|---|---|
| 1293 | 1876 | Birth in Al-Hukm Palace, Riyadh |
| 1311 | 1893 | Move to Kuwait, start of nine-year stay |
| 1319 | 1901–1902 | Recapture of Riyadh after Battle of Al-Masmak |
Darah described the session as part of a series of cultural programmes designed to record and study the life of King Abdulaziz and the formation of the Saudi state. By revisiting moments such as the Kuwait period, the Battle of Al-Masmak and the first photograph, the foundation aims to provide researchers and the public with clearer insight into the development of Saudi Arabia.
