SCRF 2024 Highlights: Libraries And Books Uphold Emotional Ties In Digital Era

At the 15th edition of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF), held at Expo Centre Sharjah, a compelling discussion unfolded on the enduring significance of books and libraries in the digital age. The panel, moderated by radio presenter Louis Denham, featured insights from Sohini Mitra, publisher of Children and Young Adult books at Penguin Random House India; Cathy Camper, an Arab-American author, librarian, and artist; and Flora Majdalawi, a Jordan-based author and publisher. These experts unanimously championed the irreplaceable value of physical books and the pivotal role of libraries in fostering academic success and cultural enrichment.

Cathy Camper emphasized the tactile joy and rhythm found in turning the pages of a physical book, which she believes plays a crucial role in a child's interaction with stories. Despite acknowledging the surge in digital book consumption post-Covid-19, Camper highlighted the unique excitement children experience when opening a hard copy. Sohini Mitra echoed this sentiment, pointing out that reading books from diverse cultures enhances understanding and broadens perspectives, shaping well-rounded individuals. She stressed that public libraries serve as vital resources for those unable to afford books, offering children a sense of empowerment through choice.

Libraries' Emotional Ties Stand Strong

Flora Majdalawi discussed the universal bond people share with books, underscoring their role in imparting values and morals. She also highlighted the social function of libraries, citing a Finnish library near the country’s Parliament that doubles as a community center for various activities. The SCRF, running from May 1-12 with the theme ‘Once Upon a Hero’, brings together young readers, artists, creatives, and families to explore millions of books, including the latest releases in children’s and YA literature from around the world.

The consensus among the panelists was clear: despite the digital world's growing influence, books and libraries retain their crucial role in academic achievement and cultural development. They provide essential resources for scholarly pursuits and offer a sanctuary for those seeking knowledge and entertainment alike. As technology continues to evolve, books remain a constant source of learning and joy for individuals of all ages.
