Lavender Honey Emerges As A Unique Addition To Aseer’s Beekeeping Industry

The beekeeping industry in Aseer is thriving, encouraging farmers and honey producers to cultivate plants that attract bees and yield premium honey. Lavender, a plant gaining traction in the region, owes its popularity to Dr. Ali Al-Shehri, an agricultural expert from Abha. He has dedicated part of his land to growing lavender, known for its diverse varieties and ability to produce high-quality honey.

Dr. Al-Shehri aims to introduce lavender honey as a complement to Aseer's established honey varieties like Sidr and Talh. In an interview with the Saudi Press Agency, he shared his motivation for experimenting with lavender. "While the plant is not widely known in the region, its potential for producing high-quality honey made it an attractive option," he explained.

Lavender Honey Joins Aseer’s Beekeeping Scene

Lavender plants are visually striking, with flowers ranging from purple to crimson and white tinged with pink. They can grow up to a meter high and bloom from early summer to fall. Besides honey production, lavender is valued for its essential oils, which offer numerous health benefits.

Lavender honey stands out due to its unique flavour and colour, making it a new variety in Saudi Arabia. Its rarity and purity contribute to its market value, with prices reaching up to SAR1,000 per kilogram. This honey is harvested from mid-summer to early fall and is known for its light amber colour, thick texture, and sweet fragrance.

Dr. Al-Shehri highlighted the potential of lavender honey in the market due to its distinctive characteristics. Despite being relatively unknown in the region, the plant's ability to produce high-quality honey makes it an appealing choice for local producers.

The introduction of lavender honey could diversify Aseer's existing range of honeys. This diversification could enhance the region's reputation as a producer of premium honey varieties.

In summary, Dr. Al-Shehri's efforts in cultivating lavender highlight the plant's potential beyond traditional uses. Its contribution to the beekeeping industry in Aseer could pave the way for new opportunities in both agriculture and commerce.
