Latifa Bint Mohammed Advocates For Media That Engages Digital Communities With Cultural Depth

H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, attended the Arab Media Summit 2025. The event, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, took place from 26th to 28th May. Organised by the Dubai Press Club, it brought together ministers, industry leaders, content creators, and influencers from across the UAE and the Arab world.

During her keynote speech titled ‘The Role of Media in the Age of Algorithms,’ H.H. Sheikha Latifa highlighted a pivotal moment where media intersects with digital transformation. She stated, "We are navigating a critical juncture—where media intersects with digital transformation, where the rules of communication and influence are being redefined, and where the roles of institutions and individuals are undergoing rapid shifts."

Latifa bint Mohammed on Media's Role in Culture

Sheikha Latifa emphasised that algorithms and artificial intelligence are tools created by humans. "Algorithms and artificial intelligence are tools we have created whose keys remain in our hands. It is we who breathe life into them, define their purpose, and shape their outcomes," she noted. These tools can be controlled to shape outcomes according to human intentions.

Sheikha Latifa also discussed how digital communities have become parallel realities influencing identities and decisions. With over 5 billion active social media users globally by 2025, these platforms represent nearly 65% of humanity. This shift signifies a profound transformation in global connectivity.

In this digital age, identity is increasingly defined by ideas and shared values rather than geography. Digital communities offer spaces for dialogue and expression, providing visibility to those previously marginalised by mainstream narratives. Sheikha Latifa remarked on this evolving landscape: "I speak to you today as a participant in this evolving landscape."

She described how people worldwide connect through shared interests rather than physical proximity. For instance, a young anime fan in the UAE connects with peers in Tokyo; a teenager in the Netherlands feels close to a football star in Brazil; a student in Britain shares his story globally.

The Role of Influencers

Today’s influencers play a significant role in shaping public awareness and cultural memory. Their ability to reach audiences directly positions them as new voices competing with traditional media. Sheikha Latifa addressed influencers: "You are not simply entertainers or trendsetters. You are storytellers of your generation."

She urged influencers to use their power intentionally: "Let your content uplift, inform, and inspire." The media should not compete with influencers for trends but focus on creating meaningful content that rebuilds trust.

Media's Evolving Responsibility

Sheikha Latifa called for reexamining media’s role amid technological disruption. She stressed that media must remain a trusted source while embracing digital advancements. The ethical imperative is to verify information and counter misinformation with credible content rooted in truth.

The media should interpret facts beyond mere reporting to promote understanding based on shared human values rather than deepening divisions. This approach allows it to reclaim its role as a responsible narrator defined by integrity.

A Call for Positive Impact

In her closing remarks, Sheikha Latifa emphasised that digital communities extend human connections born from universal needs for dialogue and engagement. She launched #YourContentYourImpact during the session as a call for meaningful digital footprints reflecting shared values.

This hashtag symbolises collective aspirations to create uplifting content that leaves an impactful mark while encouraging reflection before publishing online material: "This hashtag is more than a digital symbol; it is a thread that connects us wherever we are."

The summit concluded with Sheikha Latifa urging participants to harness social media positively by building engaged communities transcending borders towards shared human aspirations.
