Kuwait's New Traffic Law To Raise Fines, Aiming For Safer Roads

The Ministry of Interior is working on a new traffic law to raise fines for various traffic violations, following studies that link these violations to increased traffic accident rates, according to Al-Anba daily. The aim is not to burden citizens or residents financially but to promote safer roads and decrease fatalities and injuries caused by accidents.

A security source highlighted that in other countries, including Gulf states, people tend to follow traffic regulations due to the high fines imposed strictly. Many confess that they adhere to rules such as wearing seat belts and refraining from using phones while driving because of the deterrent effect of substantial fines.

The source also emphasized the insufficiency of existing penalties in preventing violations. For instance, fines established in the 1970s, like a 50-dinar penalty for running a red light, once constituted a significant part of salaries but now represent only a small fraction. This discrepancy highlights the necessity for updated penalties that correspond with current income levels, thereby encouraging discipline and strengthening deterrence.
