Kuwait Ends Public Sector Job Freeze With Immediate Effect
In a significant development for Kuwait's public sector, the government has received notification from His Highness the Emir Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah regarding the lifting of a comprehensive freeze on appointments, transfers, and promotions within public jobs. This announcement was made by Cabinet spokesperson Amer Al-Ajmi. The freeze was initially implemented by His Highness the Emir on December 5, during his tenure as Crown Prince, to address concerns over the potential misuse of appointments, particularly in high-ranking positions.
His Highness Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah ascended to the position of the country's ruler on December 16, succeeding former Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The decision to impose a freeze on government jobs was part of efforts to ensure the integrity of the appointment process within the public sector. According to Amer Al-Ajmi, the Cabinet was briefed on the Emir's decision during its weekly meeting held on Monday night.
The lifting of the freeze is poised to have substantial implications for Kuwait's workforce, particularly considering that approximately 80 percent of the Kuwaiti workforce, which numbers around 400,000 individuals, is employed within the government sector. This move is anticipated to open up opportunities for career advancement and mobility for many employees who have been affected by the suspension.
