Kuwait Stresses Legal Consequences For Delayed Wages In Private Sector

During the celebration of International Labor Day, Dr. Fahd Al-Murad, the Acting Deputy Director of the Public Authority for Manpower for Workforce Protection Sector Affairs, delivered a stern warning to private sector business owners and companies in Kuwait regarding the timely payment of workers' monthly wages. Speaking at an event held at the Avenues Mall, in a collaborative effort with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the General Union of Kuwaiti Workers, Dr. Al-Murad outlined the potential consequences of wage payment delays, including the suspension of the employer's file and granting workers the right to transfer to another employer.

The Authority is steadfast in its commitment to enforcing compliance with wage payment regulations as outlined in Article 57 of Law 6/2010, which governs work within the private sector. Dr. Al-Murad highlighted the Authority's ongoing efforts to coordinate with businesses, streamline document submissions for wage transfers, and develop inspection mechanisms to keep pace with Kuwait's commercial growth. Furthermore, the Authority aims to educate both business owners and workers on their respective rights and obligations, thereby promoting a stable and just labor market.

Aseel Al-Mazyad, Director of the Public Relations and Media Department at the Authority, underscored the significance of direct communication in informing stakeholders about labor laws and procedures. She mentioned the Authority's forthcoming awareness campaign on the prohibition of working at noon and its readiness to address labor market inquiries. Echoing the sentiment for labor rights, Yahya Al-Dosari, head of the Workers Union in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Financial Secretary of the General Federation of Labor, advocated for recognizing International Labor Day as an official holiday in Kuwait, in line with international norms.

Hussein Al-Tarkait, head of the Department of Industry and Labor at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, lauded the collaborative efforts between the Chamber and the Authority in swiftly tackling labor market issues and supporting both workers and business owners. Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs, Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah, reaffirmed Kuwait's dedication to respecting workers' rights and ensuring decent work opportunities, particularly for expatriate workers who constitute 75 percent of the workforce and play a crucial role in the nation's economy.

The unified stance of Kuwait's governmental and non-governmental bodies highlights the country's dedication to upholding labor laws and enhancing the working conditions for its sizable workforce. Through collaboration, awareness initiatives, and stringent enforcement of labor regulations, Kuwait aims to foster a labor market that is fair, just, and beneficial for all parties involved.
