Kuwait Implements New Benefits For Revoked Citizenship Cases
In a significant move by the Kuwaiti government, a recent announcement by Sheikh Fahad Youssef Saud Al-Sabah, the Minister of Interior, outlined measures concerning individuals whose Kuwaiti citizenship had been revoked, according to Saudi Gazette reports.
Sheikh Fahad, who also chairs the Supreme Committee for Kuwaiti Citizenship, stated in a press release that these persons would continue to enjoy the benefits previously available to citizens for their lifetime. This includes issuing them with blue Kuwaiti passports and a civil identification card akin to the Kuwaiti blue ID, allowing them to be treated as Kuwaiti nationals in all but name.
The minister detailed that the revocation of citizenship primarily affected individuals found guilty of fraud, forgery, or holding dual nationality without filing any grievances against the decision. Some of these individuals had left the country hastily within 48 hours after the activation of a hotline for citizenship complaints earlier this year in May, June, and July.
This rapid departure indicated their awareness of the violations committed. Sheikh Fahad further illuminated cases where citizenship was obtained under suspicious circumstances, such as through sham marriages. These marriages were dissolved soon after the acquisition of nationality, with some individuals securing citizenship within just two years of marriage, starkly contravening the regulations governing nationality.
The Kuwaiti authorities are currently undertaking a meticulous review of citizenship records, unearthing thousands of instances where nationality was acquired through deceptive means or by individuals maintaining dual citizenship, in direct breach of Kuwaiti law. This crackdown on fraudulent citizenship acquisition has extended to foreign spouses of Kuwaiti nationals who gained nationality through marriage.
In a broader clampdown to uphold the integrity of the Nationality Law, the government last month stripped a significant number of people of their Kuwaiti citizenship. These included high-profile figures such as the singer Nawal and the actor Dawood Hussein. This action is part of a concerted effort to reevaluate and enforce the Nationality Law more strictly.
This approach towards reviewing and rectifying the citizenship status of individuals highlights the Kuwaiti government's commitment to ensuring that the privilege of nationality is preserved for those who meet the lawful criteria. The provision of continued benefits to those whose citizenship has been revoked underscores a humane approach to a complex issue, ensuring that while legal standards are upheld.
