KSrelief Implements Global Initiatives For Mine Clearance And Civilian Protection
The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) in Saudi Arabia has been pivotal in addressing global humanitarian challenges. Their focus includes responding to crises, conflicts, and natural disasters. The Kingdom aims to foster stability and prosperity worldwide through initiatives like mine clearance, which seeks to mitigate the social and economic impacts of landmines and unexploded ordnance.
KSrelief's de-mining efforts span Yemen, Azerbaijan, and Iraq, with projects valued at $241,167,000. In mid-2018, the Masam Landmine Clearance Project was launched in Yemen. This initiative aims to help Yemenis tackle security threats posed by mines. A team of 550 employees, including 32 trained mine clearance teams, works to remove various explosive devices planted across different regions.

The Masam project has successfully removed 486,108 landmines and unexploded ordnance since its inception. It has also cleared 65,888,674 cubic meters of land. These efforts aim to counter direct threats to Yemeni lives and promote regional security while addressing humanitarian issues caused by buried explosives.
In addition to mine clearance, KSrelief has established a prosthetics program in Yemen. This initiative benefits 25,340 individuals by providing high-quality prosthetic limbs and training local staff in manufacturing techniques. The goal is to build health institutions' capacity for sustainable services and rehabilitate injured individuals so they can lead productive lives.
The total investment in prosthetics projects in Yemen amounts to $39,497,000. The program extends beyond its primary mission by offering health and social assistance to victims and those affected by landmines.
Challenges Faced by Workers
Demining operations are fraught with danger. Since the project's launch, approximately 30 individuals have lost their lives due to explosions during clearance activities. Despite these risks, KSrelief remains committed to combating the spread of landmines beyond Yemen's borders.
Efforts Beyond Yemen
In January 2024, KSrelief initiated financial grants for Azerbaijani landmine clearance. This effort supports reconstruction and helps displaced persons return home safely. The objective is to protect civilians—especially women and children—and enhance local capacities for safer environments.
By April 2024, KSrelief funded survey and clearance projects for cluster munitions in several Iraqi governorates. These efforts aim for a mine-free environment that ensures stability for Iraqi citizens while improving livelihoods through resumed farming activities.
International Day for Mine Awareness
KSrelief marks the International Day for Mine Awareness on April 4th annually. This observance raises awareness about mine dangers while advocating for enhanced efforts against them. It also focuses on building capacities in affected countries and alleviating suffering among impacted communities.
